It’s a great question, especially if you’ve only ever experienced Reiki in person.
Distance Reiki is based on the same principles as an in-person Reiki session. The main difference is simply that you receive the session from wherever you are whether that’s curled up on your couch, lying in bed, or relaxing somewhere that feels peaceful and comfortable to you.
What Is Distance Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle energy healing practice intended to support relaxation, balance and overall well-being.
During an in-person session, a Reiki practitioner works with you while you are physically present. During a Distance Reiki session, the practitioner uses Reiki techniques and focused intention without needing to be physically beside you.
Within Reiki practice, there is a belief that Reiki energy is not limited by physical distance. This is why practitioners may offer sessions to people who are in another home, another city or even another country.
You don’t need to completely understand how it works, or even know much about Reiki to simply allow yourself the opportunity to slow down and experience the session.
What Happens During a Distance Reiki Session?
Before we begin, I’ll invite you to find a comfortable, quiet space where you’re unlikely to be interrupted.
You might choose to lie down, sit comfortably, dim the lights, play gentle music or wrap yourself in a blanket. There really isn’t a “right” way to receive Reiki. The goal is simply to give yourself permission to be still.
At the agreed-upon time, I begin your Reiki session from my own space, focusing the session specifically on you and your energy. While you relax, you may notice different sensations. Some people experience warmth or tingling. Others notice a sense of heaviness or lightness, see colours, feel emotional, become deeply relaxed or even fall asleep. And sometimes, you may not notice very much at all….That’s okay too.
Every Reiki experience is different, and you don’t need to feel something dramatic for the time you’ve set aside for yourself to be meaningful.
How Can Reiki Be Sent From a Distance?
From a Reiki perspective, energy and intention are not considered limited by physical space. Distance Reiki practitioners use specific Reiki practices to intentionally direct the session toward the recipient.
You can think of it a little like meditation or prayer. You don’t need to be physically beside someone to focus loving thoughts, intentions or attention toward them. Distance Reiki follows a similar spiritual philosophy.
It’s also important to recognize that Reiki is a complementary wellness practice. While many people find Reiki deeply relaxing or personally meaningful, the idea that healing energy can literally be transmitted over a distance has not been established by scientific evidence. Reiki should not replace medical care, mental health treatment or advice from a qualified healthcare professional. For me, Reiki is about creating space for you to pause, reconnect and receive.
Why Choose Distance Reiki?
One of the beautiful things about Distance Reiki is its accessibility. You don’t need to drive anywhere. You don’t need to worry about traffic, weather or fitting travel time into your day. You can receive your session in the comfort and privacy of your own home.
It can be especially appealing when you’re feeling tired, overwhelmed or simply don’t feel like going anywhere. And when the session ends, you can remain exactly where you are. No rushing back into your day allowing you a little more time to breathe, reflect and enjoy the stillness you’ve created.
Creating Space to Reconnect
Whether Reiki happens in person or from a distance, I see it as an invitation to intentionally slow down.
We spend so much of our lives doing, planning, caring for others and moving on to the next thing. Sometimes we need a little space to simply be.
Distance Reiki gives you an opportunity to create that space wherever you happen to be. You don’t need to have Reiki figured out. You don’t need to know what you’re supposed to feel. You simply need to arrive with an open mind, get comfortable and allow yourself some time that is completely yours.
